I wonder all the time if you remember
If any of it even feels familiar
Or is it just an event someone captured
A lifetime ago, in a picture
You pull out, every now and then
And all you see are strangers
Age – dyed photograph, child’s nativity scene
A wise man and an angel, dressed in tinsel and sheets
Adorned with dust and creases
From each time you unfold it, searching for something
Hoping this time, it reveals what it is hiding
But its secrets it keeps, within temptations reach
And you tie yourself in silver
Fighting the taste of memories
Where only the echo lingers
Shadows haunting every step
And you can’t remember
What you can’t forget
Each new winter renews the haunting
With every silver dusted tree
The breath of whispers on a breeze
Beckoning an answer, a growing ache
Promises start to splinter and break
Each word growing hollow until its meaning fades
Battling the urge to submit to siren what-ifs
Begging an apology in advance, still stuck in a dance
With someone from a long-forgotten past
Fighting to remain in the present, as hard as you can
But every kiss tastes like ash, and leaves you feeling parched
And your mother is pulling out those old photos again
From the school you once attended
Class picture, printed in the paper
All the faces a blur, except for one
A beacon drawing your gaze
Complete with a list of names
If only you knew, the one you need
On your tree, she wants an angel
But to you, it feels like a betrayal, and its wounds cut too deep
For somewhere in the world, there’s an angel
Who left you the feathers of her wings
And her halo, for you to keep
Who you look for, in the face of every girl you see
Waiting for a jolt of recognition, to quench the hunger
Growing every day, pulling you farther
Your only relief comes in dreams
Venus watches from her moon
As she sends you blush painted scenes
Woven with red string
Her silent gaze lingers
Like the gentle brush of her fingers in your hair
Your limbs itch, and your bones ache
Wishing you could reach her
Run ragged with desperation
Begging on your knees for salvation
Aged, creased photograph in your hands
She appears like a holy revelation
Same blue eyes, same smile to wipe away the years
And you’re drowning, sinking, drinking in the memories
Your throat is a burning, blazing fire
Every nerve sparks under your fingers
As you chase the current pulling you in
And let yourself sink in
Oh sweet heaven, bestow on me your favour
Take me to the world that is only ours
Let me bask in the honour of your warmth
All you give, I will receive
As we relearn each other
Bathing in mountain springs
And cloud silk sheets
Imprinting these memories on our skin
For us to keep
I wonder all the time if you remember
If any of it even feels familiar
Or is it just an event someone captured
A lifetime ago, in a picture
You pull out, every now and then
And all you see are strangers
